Juicy, fast, crispy, and unbelievably tasty! Air fryer chicken wings are the ultimate treat ready in under 30 minutes.

Do you love chicken wings? Do you love your air fryer? We think chicken wings and the air fryer are a match made in heaven.

These air fryer chicken wings are quicker than a trip to the bar and much juicier, taking just 20 minutes in the air fryer. Plus, they’re not deep-fried!

Why Air Fryer Chicken Wings Are the Best

To us, the air fryer is the top choice for juicy, crispy chicken wings.

The air fryer circulates hot air around the wings, creating a perfectly crisp shell while keeping the insides tender.

While baking wings in the oven takes about an hour, air fryer chicken wings are done in just 20 minutes, preventing them from drying out.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Wings

  1. Prep the Chicken: Pat your chicken wings dry with a paper towel. Moisture is the enemy of crispy wings.
  2. Lightly Oil the Chicken: Toss the wings with oil or use a spray oil to ensure even browning.
  3. Season the Chicken: In a large bowl, coat the wings with baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Air Fry: Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket with oil. Arrange the wings in a single layer with some space in between.
  5. Flip and Fry Again: Flip the wings halfway through cooking.
  6. Toss and Serve: Enjoy the wings as they are or toss them with your favorite sauce.

Cooking Time for Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Cook the wings for 15 minutes at 400°F, flip them, and cook for another 5 minutes at the same temperature.

For extra crispy wings, let them rest for 5 minutes and then give them another 5-minute blast at 400ºF.

Basic Air Fryer Chicken Wings Recipe

The key to tasty air fryer chicken wings is a well-seasoned base.

For these wings, we use baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper, resulting in juicy, crisp, and flavorful wings.

Extra Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

The secret to extra crispy wings is baking powder (not baking soda) and salt.

The baking powder helps the wings brown more easily, while the salt draws out moisture, ensuring your wings are crispy and golden.

Buffalo Wings and Other Sauces

While these wings are delicious on their own, variety is the spice of life. Air fryer chicken wings are perfect for buffalo wings, which are simply a mix of Frank’s Red Hot and melted butter.

For a healthier twist, reduce the butter or leave it out entirely. Other sauce ideas include:

  • Korean Wings: Heat ketchup, gochujang, honey, brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, and grated ginger with crushed garlic.
  • Pok Pok Fish Sauce Wings: Combine lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, crushed garlic, and Thai bird’s eye chili.
  • Honey Garlic Wings: Melt butter and add crushed garlic, honey, soy sauce, and water.
  • Ranch Wings: Toss wings in ranch powder.
  • Vietnamese Wings: A dry toss with a blend of umami flavors.

Can You Make Frozen Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer?

Yes, you can! It takes about 35 minutes. Cook the wings with the seasoning mix at 400°F, flipping and spraying with oil every 10 minutes until crispy.

How Many Wings Can You Make at Once?

You can cook about 1 pound of wings at a time, depending on their size. Using a rack in your air fryer can triple your wing-making capacity.

Which Air Fryer to Use

We’ve tried many air fryers, and our current favorite has a window that lets you watch the food fry, ensuring everything is cooking perfectly.

Oven Instructions

You can bake these wings in the oven at 400ºF for 45 minutes, flipping halfway through.

If your oven has a convection mode, follow the same instructions as for the air fryer, possibly adding an extra 5 minutes.
