Streamlining National Identity: Enough with the Multiple Cards!
The Federal Government’s plan to introduce three new national ID cards has sparked outrage among Nigerians. While a robust national identification system is crucial, citizens are weary of multiplying cards that add little value.
A Flurry of Frustration
Nigerians already possess a plethora of ID documents: the National ID card, NIN, BVN, driver’s license, voter card, passport, and more. Each requires time, effort, and money to obtain.
The current national ID card issuance process is a nightmare, with long queues, sun exposure, and manual registration. Public frustration with telecom biometric data collection is also high.
Profits Over People?
The motivation behind these new cards appears financial. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) shouldn’t prioritize revenue generation.
A Better Way Forward
Instead of another registration frenzy, the government should harmonize existing cards. Upgrading the current national ID card with promised features like digital versions and payment capabilities makes more sense. Periodic upgrades are preferable to a constant stream of entirely new cards.
Reducing the Burden
This approach would:
- Reduce citizen fatigue and frustration
- Address concerns about government insensitivity
- Eliminate suspicion of a money-making scheme
Nigerians deserve clear communication about efforts to streamline ID systems. The focus should be on functionality and user experience, not on issuing yet another card.
